The goal of the Read Brave Kids programis really to empower kids to have
conversations, to have opinions, to knowthat their voices matter in the world.
There are a lot of different ways thatyouth can get involved in the program and
one of the great things about thisprogram is that it really is for youth
of all ages. We have lists of books thatkids can read, we're gonna have
discussion prompts for some of thosebooks, we're going to have storytimes
that focus on the natural world and theenvironment, and we also have Maker Break
programs that happen this spring thatare for school-aged kids that focus on
hands-on interspace learning. They'realso going to be able to work with
either their classes or come to thepublic library to vote on their favorite
books, as well as submit art to our artcontest.
"The Digger and the Flower" by Minnesota author Joseph Kuefler
is this year's picture book. It tells the story
of a digging machine that discovers aflower poking out of the rubble in a
construction site and must help theflower grow and bloom.
"If Polar Bears Disappeared" by Lily Williams is ourearly-grade selection.
It tells the story of our interconnectedness with nature,
how humans, animals, plants, and water all live together,
what would happen if too much of ourenvironment changes, and what can we do to help?
"Bayou Magic" by Jewell Parker Rhodes,
a Coretta Scott King Honor author,
is our middle-grade selection.In a magical coming-of-age story,
readers dive into a world rich with Southernfolklore plus an environmental twist.
When we think about the idea of theclimate crisis that we're experiencing
right now, it's scary for adults, but it'sespecially scary for children and so the
idea of talking about climate changewith kids isn't doom and gloom,
it's really about empowering them to learnabout the world around them,
to understand some concrete solutions andalso to foster feelings of positivity
about the progress that we can maketogether.
